The air in a bathroom, and everywhere else, is filled with floating mold spores, and one must takes pains not to provide a landing strip. Mold needs two things to grow: water and food. Eliminate either and you eliminate the mold problem.

But in the bathroom, a room the British call the water closet for good reason, eliminating water isn’t viable. Cutting off food, though, is. Mold eats organic matter, meaning anything with particles that were once, or still are, alive: dirt, skin cells, cotton, cardboard, dust, hair, paper, wood. That mold on your ceramic tile? It lives off dirt and soap, not the tile. (more…)

If you’re delinquent on your mortgage, your credit score will suffer. Everyone knows that. The question is, by how much?

Until recently, those answers were hard to come by. Credit bureaus were uncommunicative about expressing, in points, just how much impact different foreclosure types of mortgage delinquencies have on scores.

Notice that for both borrowers a single one-time black mark results in steep drops, but it is when they fall further behind that things get really harsh, according to Craig Watts, a spokesman for Fair Isaac.

“The lending industry tends to regard an account differently when it has become 90 or more days late,” he said, “The likelihood that consumers will resume paying their overdue obligations drops off significantly after the delinquencies have reached 90 days.” (more…)

Buying a house is a complex transaction. It should be a team effort. You’ll need a real estate agent, lender, inspector, insurer, perhaps a lawyer and other team members to help you through each step of the way. Team build before you start the search.

If you believe in fairy tales you probably shouldn’t be buying a home. You won’t live happily ever after if you emote your way through the home buying process. Your home should fit your real needs, not your yen for drama. Buy a home that fits your budget and your lifestyle. Be sure the home is in a community and neighborhood you desire. Visit neighborhoods several times before you buy to check out schools, noise and traffic patterns. (more…)

One recent entry on the domestic front is just now getting its steroid moment: the shredder. As unlikely as it sounds, some people are willingly, even enthusiastically, spending upward of $1,000 on shredders heavy duty enough to reduce personal documents and other items to the consistency of confetti — particularly during tax season, or high shredding season, when shredder sales peak every year.

As concerns over identity theft grow, the shredder is emerging as a symbol for the Age of Anxiety, something akin to what the power lawnmower was to the 1950s.

For some, of course, shredding is simply another time-consuming chore, but for others, it offers a sense of security and accomplishment — the satisfaction that comes from decimating a pile of junk mail — however short-lived the victory. (more…)
