Save On Your Next Home Remodeling Project
With today’s challenging housing market, more homeowners are looking to improve their home instead of selling and upgrading to a better house. Remodels can get expensive though, and nobody wants to spend more than necessary. Here are seven ways you get to most from your remodeling dollar.
Sure, it’s nice just to hand your kitchen remodel or basement finishing project to someone else to handle, but you’re paying a price for this privilege. Why not hire that electrician or plumber yourself? Although contractors can be a timesaver, they charge for that time. Break down your remodeling project into different tasks (electrical, drywall, etc.) and get quotes yourself. Look for parts you may be able to do yourself. Just be sure to check with your local building department on building permits you may need.

Garages Are For Cars
No room in your garage … for your cars? Welcome to the club. A quarter of Americans with two-car garages can’t park in theirs, and another third can squeeze in only one vehicle, according to the Department of Energy. Getting a grip on the jumble of yard tools, sports gear, and random junk is daunting, sure. But you’ll make the space more attractive and useful — and spare your car from the elements too. Just follow this game plan.
Toss or donate everything your family doesn’t use. Group the rest by theme: yard tools, sports equipment, beach toys, and so on. Stow the small stuff in translucent, stackable, snap-top bins ($5 to $23 at thestoragestore.com) so you can see what’s inside. If you’re lucky enough to have a wall at least three feet away from the nearest vehicle, it’s worth spending extra money on an attractive storage system that you can also modify to suit your needs. For example, Gladiator Garageworks makes a line of rugged steel cabinets, workbenches, racks, and tool drawers that sit on locking casters– no installation needed ($100 to $800 apiece at sears.com). A How-To Of Electing Homeowner Association Boards
Homeowner associations are designed to be representative democracies governed by a board of directors elected by the members. Electing directors to the board that can thoughtfully govern is extremely important. To accomplish this, elections must be carefully planned, not hatched at the last minute. Here are important components of a successful election process:
When seeking nominations, a job description should be prepared so potential candidates know what is expected of them. Some refuse to run because they fear the unknown or an open-ended commitment. The director job and term of office can easily be summarized in a paragraph as can the descriptions of officer jobs (president, treasurer and secretary). Take the time to make sure all potential candidates understand and commit to fulfilling the job description by informing them of expectations in advance. (more…)

Senate Addresses Deceptive Mortgage Practices
The Senate voted Wednesday to ban controversial “liar loans,” which helped bring down the housing market.
The legislation, part of the broader financial regulatory reform bill working its way through Congress, would require lenders to fully document a borrower’s income before originating a mortgage. It would also mandate that lenders verify a borrower’s ability to repay the loan.
This would effectively end the origination of no-doc or stated-income mortgages, which many call “liar loans” because borrowers did not have to prove their income. Housing experts point to these mortgages as one catalyst for the housing collapse. (more…)
